M12.9 Blog: Climate Change

  1. What do you personally find most troubling about climate change?  The lack of acknowledgement and sense of urgency to correct  climate change is what I find to be most troubling.
  2. As a public health professional, what do you think needs the greatest attention right now? Active measures to address climate change preparedness should be conducted with a sense of urgency. The implications for lack of climate change preparedness will be detrimental for all us, an example demonstrating the implication = Increased storm activity, as of August 2018 we've had 91 major hurricanes (NOAA,2018)
  3. If you were visiting with a long-lost relative who had never heard about climate change, how would you describe it and its attendant human health and ecological threats? Climate change is also known as global warming, rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. Emission of greenhouse gases has a large role in creating this rise in the temperature. The more greenhouse gases that get trapped the warmer our temperature gets. I would also like to share this video to explain climate change :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4H1N_yXBiA. The impact to human health and ecological threat is best described by this flowchart by US Global Change Research Program. Here, the center boxes list some selected examples of the kinds of changes in climate drivers, exposure, and health outcomes explored in this report. Exposure pathways exist within the context of other factors that positively or negatively influence health outcomes (gray side boxes). Some of the key factors that influence vulnerability for individuals are shown in the right box, and include social determinants of health and behavioral choices. Some key factors that influence vulnerability at larger scales, such as natural and built environments, governance and management, and institutions, are shown in the left box. All of these influencing factors can affect an individual’s or a community’s vulnerability through changes in exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity and may also be affected by climate change (US Global Change Research Program, 2018).

  1. Hi Claudia,

I appreciate your use of the word urgency. In my blog post, I also mention the clear sense of disregard for climate change, despite the data being used to prove it's danger to our environment and health. Unfortunately, the political agendas/ideologies of our leaders make it challenging to tackle climate change. I believe that we must first introduce green chemistry initiatives via policy in order to begin tackling climate change at it's core.

In addition, great visual! I think it creates a great foundation on the topic of climate change for someone who may not be familiar with it's implications.

  2. Thanks Claudia for sharing! I think it is especially important for us to focus on the climate drivers since those are what cause climate change. We need to look at those factors that affect climate change if we want to make any real impact in climate change.
