M6.7 Blog: Obesogens

California is a very fortunate state in terms of our harvesting seasons, we have a plethora of produce to choose from varying on the region of the state we choose to harvest. During my hospitalization for my labor and delivery, the quality of food I was provided was healthy and nutritious. However, this isn't a common finding as most hospitals across our county. Organic produce isn't purchased or provided by most hospitals due to cost.
I am familiar the term and content of Obesogens, unfortunately the weight of the issue isn't adequately being addressed, however it is being capitalized by the pharmaceutical industry. The term obesogen was coined in 2006 by Felix GrĂ¼n and Bruce Blumberg of Univeristy of California, Irvine. It refers to chemical compounds that disrupts lipid metabolism and an association with the development of obestity is noted.
I researched Organotins, which are compounds or stannanes are chemical compounds based on tin with hydrocarbon substituents. Organotin chemistry is part of the wider field of organometallic chemistry. The first organotin compound was diethyltin diiodide ((C2H5)2SnI2), discovered by Edward Frankland in 1849. According to 33 USCS § 2402 (4), the term organotin means “any compound of tin used as a biocide in an antifouling paint.” Toxnet found some of the organotin compounds can be quite toxic causing neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, renal toxicity or dermal toxicity
Thanks for sharing your diet during your pregnancy Claudia! Hospitals don’t always provide the best food and I hope that whenever I get admitted into a hospital setting, I receive the best food. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Claudia,
ReplyDeleteUnlike you, I wasn't too familiar with the term obesogen, but I was aware of the concept. I think this topic needs to become a basic topic of conversation in many environments, particularly for those who work with/treat individuals who may experience the negative effects of obesogens. As someone who was constantly told that I needed to lose weight when I was younger, I feel like my provider would have been better prepared to support me through this process if they were aware of obesogens and could provide guided support and achievable steps for me to take while also informing me of the negative outcomes of obesogens.
