M6.4 Blog: Industrial Farming

I was aware about diminishing population of bees and how important they are for our ecosystem. Vanishing of the bees also known as Colony Collapse Disorder it sheds light to beekeepers crisis due to the agricultural process of producing our fruits and vegetables. The movie follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they try to sustain a healthy life cycle for bees along with pollination contracts throughout the US.

I live in an interesting area, its a blend of rural country/country farm life and suburbia. There are over 10 farms surrounding me and I can find organic produce and meats readily available to me. For example, a simple 10 minute walk from my house and I could get fresh chicken eggs, 20 minute walk and I can get fresh strawberries. I was pleased to learn that I live close to a bee farm-Spease Bees Honey Company.

I do not compost, but my grandparents used to compost and they used their content to grow their garden. I would consider composting but currently I do not have the time to do and I need to  properly educate myself about how to compost.

  1. Thanks Claudia for sharing where you live! My city is very similar to yours where there is a mix of farms and city life. I hope that a majority of the industrial farms around my city are providing GMO free food. Thanks!

  2. Hi Claudia,

I currently do not live near many farms, but I'm thankful that the San Francisco community is so aware and creates demand for local and sustainable food options in our communities. As I've learned more about the importance of healthy bee colonies, I understand how essential they are to providing these food options for us. It is up to us to make sure our choices create the demand for sustainable options vs. those that harm our environment and our bees.
