M4.6 Radon
Radon

Radon is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that causes lung cancer. Radon can reside at dangerous levels inside homes, schools and other buildings. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States (United States Environmental and Protection Agency, 2018).
My Radon Awareness Campaign would include the following:
1-Increase public knowledge about Radon and its harmful health effects via public service announcements similar to the tobacco cessation campaign
2- Have a radon awareness day
3-Provide free radon testing kits and include information along with resources and references for what to do if your house tests high for radon
4- Mandate a policy change requiring radon testing to be included in home inspections at the time of purchase.

Hi Claudia,
ReplyDeleteGreat points to include in your radon awareness campaign. I really like your 3rd point of providing free testing kits and I'd compliment it with providing a "to do" list to minimize radon exposure if the test proves to be positive. I also like your 4th point, but I'd be interested in learning what you would suggest for those who are not purchasing a home/are not homeowners, but live in homes with high radon exposure. Many people rent homes as well and I fee like they'd need additional support navigating this piece, considering that landlords can be challenging to communicate with.
These are great references and I enjoyed the graph! I did not know radon is harmful and causes lung cancer so thank you Claudia for enlightening us on that subject. I hope we can minimize exposure and reduce lung cancer levels as well. My mother is a smoker so I hope we can also reduce radon levels too.
