M3.5 Transportation

My commuter car is a Honda Civic Hybrid,  and I was pleased to see the following statement, "Honda adopted a new Environmental Vision in 2011. The company will continue to work under that vision to minimize CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts, and reduce the use of fossil fuels and resources. Honda’s overall goal is to develop products with the lowest in-use CO2 emissions manufactured at plants with the lowest CO2 emissions intensity (emissions per unit of production) ( North American Environmental Report, 2013).
The closest grocery store from my house is 1.5 miles away so walking or riding a bike to the store is out of the question, especially with a 1 year old-that's never going to happen! I rely on my car heavily, my county isn't public transportation friendly unless you're living downtown. For most of my life that seems to be the common theme, for those living in the suburbs you can only rely on your own transportation for travel.  As my little one grows and we expand our family I hope to be purchase an environmentally friendly car but like organic, healthy foods they also tend to be more expensive.

  1. Hello Claudia!

I rely heavily on my car as well and believe biking is completely impossible when you are living in LA county. It is not a friendly place to use public transportation either and I assume its very hard for you as well to get around with just biking. My travel is always with my car and I hope to purchase a car too that is environmentally friendly. My car currently does save on gas though so I feel like I am making some time of effort when it comes to helping the environment. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Claudia,

I like that you did some research on your car's manufacturer. I feel like there is a trend in the industry to adopt safer alternatives and it's exciting to hear that this giant corporation is pledging to make this step. I'd be curious to see if CO2 emissions have decreased since 2011.

I agree that it's easiest to rely on our own vehicles, especially when living in the suburbs. I feel like this is most common though in developed countries. I've done my fair share of traveling to developing countries and most rely heavily on public trans and walking. In the U.S. we definitely take advantage of the opportunity to use a personal vehicle, but it definitely comes with it's consequences and increased disadvantage to the environment.
